Four moves for the relationship that changed overnight, not a general essay on earning respect.
01
Let the promotion be real before you act on it
You got the promotion: that's done. You don't need to keep earning it in your own head during week one. Spend that energy watching and listening, not performing.
02
Expect the weight to hit around day three
The "I'm not a peer anymore" feeling is normal, and it usually arrives right as the announcement excitement fades. Naming it early makes it easier to sit with instead of mistaking it for a sign something's wrong.
03
Make one credibility deposit in week two
Fix one small, real thing your former peers have been annoyed by. Visible, and theirs to notice: not a memo, an actual fix.
04
Accept you can't do both jobs
The hardest part of this promotion isn't learning to manage: it's accepting you can't be a teammate and their manager at the same time. Success now means your team succeeds, not that you personally deliver.
