You just got promoted into management.

This page is the situation. The Playbook is the actual plan, day by day, for your first year. Read this, then go there.

Four moves for the first stretch, not a general essay on becoming a manager.

01
Don't manage like you're still on the team
The instinct to keep doing the work you're good at, instead of the new job, is the single most common first mistake. Your job changed even if the desk didn't.
02
Have the "how we work now" conversation with former peers
Name the shift explicitly instead of letting it happen awkwardly and unspoken. Say your working-hour and communication preferences out loud once to the whole team, rather than repeating them one-on-one and having everyone hear a slightly different version.
03
Give yourself permission to not know things yet
You were promoted for your judgment, not because you already have every management skill. Learning in public is expected here, not a liability.
04
Find one person a few months ahead of you
A peer manager, or your own manager: someone you can ask the dumb questions to without it costing you credibility with your own team.
