The goldfish mindset, a ten-second memory, keeps swimming forward. Losses treated as data don't need to be relived, just reviewed.
Most new managers replay a mistake more times than the mistake deserves. When a project goes sideways or a target gets missed, the instinct is to relitigate it, in the retro, in your own head, across the next three 1:1s. That instinct feels like accountability, but it mostly just delays the next attempt.
Data doesn't need forgiveness. It needs to be looked at once, clearly, and then acted on. Separate the review from the rumination: pull out what changes next time, then actually close the file.
After your next miss, write down exactly one sentence, what you'll do differently next time, then stop talking about it. Bring it up again only if it repeats.
