How fast you personally recover from a setback and how long you're willing to invest in someone else's growth are two different clocks. Run them separately.
It's easy to confuse moving on quickly with giving up on someone slowly. A short memory for setbacks keeps you and your team moving instead of stuck relitigating last week, but that same short memory can quietly turn into short patience with a report who's still developing.
Reset the clock on the incident. Don't reset the clock on the person. Someone can have a bad sprint and still be three months into a trajectory you already agreed was worth six.
After your next 1:1 about a setback, write down the timeline you actually expect improvement on. Refer back to that instead of your gut reaction next time it comes up.
